Ronald Lashley - Flautist, Organist, Bass Clarinetist, Former NYC Music teacher, Producer, Recording Artist and Founder of Hawthplay Records LLC.



Early Life          


Ronald Lashley was Born in Barbados. He attended Roebuck Primary School and Combermere High School (BB). In 1981 Ronald was awarded an OAS scholarship to study Flute in North Dakota at the International Music Camp. After the summer semester he departed to London to study Organ Building with N.P. Mander Organ Company. During his Organ studies Ronald worked as an apprentice rebuilding and tuning organs. Ronald was part of the Organ Building team that prepared the St. Paul's Cathedral Organ for the Royal wedding. During his organ building stint Ronald studied organ with Ann Marsden Thomas and took courses in German and Music at the Morley College. After Completion of his studies in London Ronald traveled to meet with his friend Professor Johannes Geffert at the famous Robert Schumann Hochschule in Dusseldorf Germany. Johannes advised Ronald to remain in Germany and study Music and the German language. After being mentored by Geffert, Ronald left for Bremen to enroll in German classes at the Goethe Institute and studied Jazz Flute with Elias Leuvarden. Within 6 months Ronald became a fluent German speaker and received a certificate in written and spoken German. While in Germany Ronald won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts where he graduated with a Bachelors degree of Music in Jazz Performance. After his  Berklee studies Ronald Lashley returned to Barbados where he became a music teacher at the Alleyne School, Foundation School, and Harrison's College. During this time he became very active performing on the Caribbean and International Jazz scene.



      In 1991  Ronald performed at the St. Lucia October Jazz Festival with the Arturo Tappin Sextet. While playing on the local scene Ronald was privileged to perform with renowned flutist Maurizio Smith and Roy Haynes who was on the island for a performance. Ronald launched his first CD Soul Talk at the  Barbados  Jazz Festival  which featured Ray Charles, Diane Reeves, Roberta Flack, Gonzalo Rubacalba, Stan Tracey and Aka Moon. Ronald has performed at almost every possible venue in Barbados. Ronald spoke about a scenario where he was performing at the waterfront café and there was a mystery "guest Performer". Within 30 minutes in comes the mystery guest Brandford Marsalis and his wife. Brandford came on stage and performed an entire set with Ronald.  

    Ronald Lashley's debut on the International Jazz scene began in Barbados in 1996 and has since taken him all over the world and in the company of some of the world's best musicians. Ronald's travels has also allowed him to work and record in exclusive studios from New York, Philadelphia and especially Hollywood  where part of his CD Memories of Paradise was recorded. Ronald's travels include France, England, Luxembourg, Holland, Canada, Lichtenstein, Budapest Hungary, Venezuela, Mustique, Martinique, St,Lucia Jazz festival, Beaches festival Toronto, London Travel Market show and many more. Ronald's musical associations and musical friends include Dave Valentin, Hubert Laws, Paquito D'Rivera, Lincoln Goines, Robby Ameen, Ron Carter, Reggie Workman, Marcus Miller, Ruben Rodriguez, Kai Eckhardt, Dawn Bishop from Sergio Mendes, Will Calhoun to name a few. Many of these artist will be appearing on some of Ronald's projects in the near feature. 


       Ronald has emerged as one of the world's top Flautist in both Jazz and Classical music. Ronald made his New York debut in 2004 with the Dave Valentin Quintet at the world famous Blue Note Jazz Club. Since this performance Ronald has been a regular performer. he performed at the Herbie Mann tribute concert which featured Paquito D'Rivera, Buddy Williams, Dave Valentin, Ruben Rodriguez, Ray Baretto, Patato Valdez, Lew Tabackin, Bill O'Conell and many more. Ronald has also performed at  Bryant Park with Dave Valentin. In 2004 Ronald Recorded Memories of Paradise CD with Dave Valentin and his band this CD was never released and will be released in the near future on Hawthplay Records LLC. Dave Valentin unfortunately suffered a stroke and is still recovering. As a tribute to him this CD will be dedicated to him. Ronald was also a member of the Manhattan Taiko Group led by Janet Youngblood. This Japanese styled group has performed at Columbia University, Yeshiva University, Kingsborough Community College, Stony Brook University, New York University and many more. Ronald has credited his musical life and his success to many including his mother Monica Miller, John Fletcher, Marcus Miller, Gerald Albright, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Marcel Dupre, Louis Vierne, Jehan Alain, Charles Marie Widor, Eugene Gigout, Billy Pierce, Hubert Laws, Dave Valentin, Ronnie Laws, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Clifford brown, Joao Giberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes  Jaco Pastorious, George Dyson, Herbert Howells, Charles Villiers Stanford, Olivier Messiaen, Charles Wesley, Frank Sinatra, Weather Report and many more. Ronald worked for a few years as a music teacher for the New York City Board of Education. Ronald graduated in 2006 from Columbia University with a MA in Music Education. Ronald is very passionate about sharing his knowledge with the young and upcoming and created Hawthplay Records to  give his Students and artists alike a platform to showcase their talents on Hawthplay Records. Ronald studied recording engineering and production and presently writes and produces for Hawthplay Records and other independent Artists.
